Monchi has left his role at Sevilla to join Unai Emery at Aston Villa
The sporting director of Sevilla, Monchi, has departed from his position to become the President of Football Operations at Aston Villa. This move will see him reunite with coach Unai Emery, as confirmed by both clubs on Friday.
Sevilla achieved unprecedented success under Monchi’s leadership, securing a remarkable seven Europa League championships, winning the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) on two occasions, and triumphing in the European Super Cup.
“I am very excited to join Aston Villa… I am also delighted and can’t wait to work with Unai Emery again, one of the best managers in football,” Monchi said in a statement.
“After enjoying so many years with Sevilla and winning several European trophies with my life-long club, I look forward to building on the recent successes at Aston Villa and ensuring this colossal club continues to grow and improve,” he added.
Monchi is concluding his second tenure as the sporting director of the LaLiga club. After departing Sevilla in 2017 to assume the role of sporting director at AS Roma, he returned to the Spanish team in 2019.
Emery departed from Villareal in October and assumed the position at Villa. Under his leadership, Villa managed to climb out of the relegation zone and secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League. This achievement also marked the club’s return to European competition after more than ten years.
