Newcastle vs Manchester City Review
Newcastle United secured their sixth consecutive victory at St James’ Park by defeating Premier League title contenders Manchester City 2-1 on Tyneside, preventing Pep Guardiola’s team from closing the gap to just one point behind leaders Arsenal. Although Manchester City dominated possession during the first half, Newcastle were content to focus on defending and capitalizing on counter-attacking opportunities in an exciting opening period. Jacob Murphy created the first clear chance with an inswinging cross that found Nick Woltemade, but the German’s header was straight at goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made a quick reflex save.

Jérémy Doku posed a constant threat throughout the half, with his passes regularly breaking through Newcastle’s defense, and it required a desperate last-ditch tackle from Fabian Schär to stop Phil Foden. The home team should have taken the lead shortly after the 30-minute mark when Harvey Barnes somehow missed an easy tap-in at the far post following another excellent cross from Murphy, although replays indicated he might have been offside. City had a chance to capitalize on that miss just before halftime to secure a valuable lead, but Foden shot wide from a great position after a slick one-two with Rayan Cherki that had completely broken down the Newcastle defense.

After an exciting first half, both teams struggled to create chances after the break, but the match came alive just after the 60-minute mark with the opening goal. A quick counterattack from the home side saw Bruno Guimarães pass the ball to Barnes, who delivered a precise finish from the edge of the box into the bottom corner.

Having seen Barnes score the opening goal in a previous loss to Brentford before the international break, Newcastle fans felt a familiar disappointment when Rúben Dias equalized just five minutes later by capitalizing on a loose ball in the penalty area and scrambling the ball past Nick Pope.

City hardly had a chance to recover before they fell behind once more, as Barnes quickly capitalized to score from close range after Guimarães’ header bounced off the bar. The goal stood following an extensive VAR review. From that point, City controlled possession, but Newcastle’s defense remained resolute, securing three points that lift them to 14th place and give Eddie Howe his first Premier League victory over City. The visitors remain in third place after another lackluster away performance, having won only two of their six league road games this season.
