PSG News Latest: Christophe Galtier has been relieved of his duties as PSG head coach

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has announced the departure of Christophe Galtier from his role as head coach, just one year after his appointment.

In a statement released by PSG, the club revealed that they had mutually agreed with Galtier to terminate his contract. The announcement acknowledged Galtier’s professionalism and commitment, which contributed to PSG’s historic eleventh French Championship title and Trophee des Champions.

The entire Paris Saint-Germain team expressed gratitude to Galtier, as well as his assistants Thierry Oleksiak and Joao Sacramento, for their dedication throughout the season. They also extended their best wishes to them for their future careers in the statement.

Galtier’s departure follows his involvement in an investigation regarding allegations of discrimination during his tenure at OGC Nice. He has been referred to the public prosecutor’s office and is expected to face trial in December 2023. Galtier was taken into police custody and charged in Nice last week.

During his single season in charge, Galtier guided PSG to an 11th Ligue 1 title, setting a new record for the club. However, the team suffered a disappointing elimination in the UEFA Champions League last-16 stage after a defeat to Bayern Munich. Additionally, supporter protests against the club’s hierarchy marred the season.

In April, the 56-year-old coach was accused of using racist, insulting, and discriminatory language towards his own players while managing OGC Nice in the 2021-22 campaign. Galtier vehemently denied these accusations through a statement from his lawyer, asserting his innocence with the utmost firmness.

If found guilty, Galtier could face a prison sentence of up to three years and a fine of €45,000.

Galtier’s final game in charge of PSG was the team’s 3-2 defeat to Clermont Foot on the last day of the 2022-23 Ligue 1 season. Prior to this match, sporting director Luis Campos had indicated that Galtier’s future remained undecided, highlighting the need for a thorough evaluation of the coach and the players. Luis Enrique has been rumoured to be the next PSG headcoach, as PSG prepares for a new era under Luis Enrique, fans and observers eagerly await the direction the experienced Spanish coach will lead the club.
