Manchester United’s centre-back, Raphael Varane, has voiced his belief that the club has the quality to clinch the prestigious Champions League title this season.
Despite a challenging start to the 2023-24 campaign, Varane remains optimistic about the Red Devils’ chances.
The French defender, who boasts an impressive four Champions League titles from his time at Real Madrid, emphasized the importance of efficiency in front of the goal. He acknowledged the need for Manchester United to create more scoring opportunities while also shoring up their defense to concede fewer goals.
Varane’s confidence in the team’s potential was evident during a recent press conference. When directly asked if Manchester United could secure the Champions League trophy this season, he responded, “Yes, I think so. I think we have the quality in the squad to win the competition.” He underlined that success in the Champions League hinges on meticulous attention to detail and efficiency.
Despite a less-than-ideal start to the season, Varane expressed faith in the squad’s quality and mentality, asserting that they possess the necessary attributes to compete with the world’s best teams. He emphasized the importance of making improvements and seizing opportunities to progress.
Manchester United has a storied history in the Champions League, having previously won the competition on three occasions, with triumphs in 1968, 1999, and 2008. In their most recent participation in the tournament, they reached the round of 16 in the 2021-22 season, narrowly losing to Atletico Madrid. Subsequently, they spent the following season in the Europa League.
Varane’s comments come on the heels of a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, marking their fourth defeat in the first seven games of the campaign. Nevertheless, the team remains determined to turn their fortunes around.
As Manchester United prepares to face Turkish giants Galatasaray in their next Champions League fixture, they see it as a prime opportunity to secure their first points in the competition this season, after losing 4-3 to Bayern Munich in their opening game.
