Real Madrid vs Manchester City Results review for the Champions League semi-finals 1st leg at the Santiago Bernabeu
At the Santiago Bernabeu, Manchester City and Real Madrid played a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal. The outcome puts City in a good position going into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium, where they will try to clinch a spot in the finals.
With scattered chances over the first 15 minutes, City took control of the game early on and kept Madrid on the back foot. Madrid, though, was hemmed in by City for the opening 30-45 minutes and only shown any attacking danger through counterattacks.
Madrid scored the opening through Vinicius in the 36th minute. In the last third, Bernardo struggled to move the ball out of his feet, and Eduardo Camavinga punished him. The French international played a one-two with Luka Modric around the corner before picking Bernardo’s pocket and driving towards the City defence. Vinicius received the ball from Camavinga and dribbled inside before launching a spectacular right-footed drive past Ederson from outside the area to put Madrid ahead.
City desperately needed to recover at halftime since there were several missed passes in the closing 10 minutes of the half. Madrid kept trying to score a second goal after Viniciu’s goal. Nevertheless, City defended well, and a Stones block to stop a Vinicius cross brought the score to 1-0 at the conclusion of the first half.
Neither team made any substitutions after the break, and Madrid’s dominance carried through to the second half. Despite Madrid’s domination, City did manage to mount one opportunity when Bernardo sent De Bruyne in down the right side of the Madrid defence. Courtois stopped De Bruyne’s shot from inside the box. Although the shot was taken, the chance was later deemed offsides.
In the 64th minute, City made a breakthrough. In the Madrid final third, Rodri moved up to recover possession of the ball by putting in Grealish. When the ball ultimately fell to Gundogan’s foot at the top of the box, the German passed the ball over to an advancing De Bruyne, who sent a scorching effort past Courtois from beyond the area to tie the score for City.
From that point forward, City appeared satisfied with a tie. The Blues settled in and made an effort to withstand pressure while maintaining possession. With five minutes remaining, City found themselves drawing thanks to two fantastic stops from Ederson and a few crucial contributions from Rodri and company. After that, Madrid came out swinging, but Ederson made a fantastic stop on a long-range shot from Madrid replacement Aurelien Tchouameni. The match finished in a 1-1 tie when the referee blew his whistle to signal the conclusion of extra time after three minutes.
Overall, City will be pleased with the outcome while being aware of the threat Madrid poses following a competitive match at the Bernabeu. Guardiola and his team will take advantage of the chance to win the match at the Etihad while also hoping to advance in their quest for a third consecutive league championship when they play Everton this weekend at Goodison Park.
