Rennes vs Marseille Review
Marseille maintained their impressive form with a 2-1 win over Rennes at Roazhon Park, marking their seventh consecutive match without a loss (6 wins, 1 draw). They dominated the first thirty minutes, with Adrien Rabiot coming close to scoring when he shot towards the top of the net from inside the penalty area, but Brice Samba made a great save. The home team was given a prime chance to score when they were awarded a penalty after Michael Murillo was deemed to have handled the ball in the box following a VAR review. Arnaud Kalimuendo took the penalty, but Geronimo Rulli made a spectacular save on his attempt aimed at the bottom-left corner.
Kalimuendo was able to redeem himself just before halftime, receiving a pass from Lorenz Assignon and scoring in the bottom-left corner. However, Marseille quickly demonstrated their strength, having won seven of their last eight away league matches, as Roberto De Zerbi’s team equalized just two minutes later with a goal from Mason Greenwood. Greenwood, assisted by Murillo, struck a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner.
The away team created more opportunities at the beginning of the second half and took the lead four minutes after the break. Rabiot scored the goal, heading Greenwood’s cross into the top-right corner. Instead of trying to defend their lead, Marseille continued to press the Rennes defense aggressively. As Rennes struggled, Marseille nearly increased their lead when Luis Henrique maneuvered into the box and fired a shot towards the bottom-right corner, but Samba made an incredible save to deny him. Moments later, Murillo also came close for the visitors, attempting to nudge the ball in from the edge of the six-yard box, but Samba was again up to the task.
The final 20 minutes of the match saw little action in front of the goals, and Marseille ultimately secured all three points. This result keeps De Zerbi’s team in second place, four points behind Paris Saint-Germain, having played one more game. Meanwhile, Rennes remains just above the relegation zone, with only one point separating them from Saint-Étienne, who are in the relegation play-off position.
