Roy Hodgson Commits to Crystal Palace

Roy Hodgson, 75, has agreed to extend his tenure as manager of Crystal Palace for the upcoming season. While the formalization of contracts is underway, the seasoned manager has verbally accepted a one-year deal to guide the club, according to The Athletic.

Hodgson assumed the role of interim manager for Palace in March, following the dismissal of Patrick Vieira amidst a disappointing run of form. During his 10-game stint, the team displayed an impressive performance, clinching five victories, three draws, and enduring only two defeats. Their commendable results culminated in an 11th-place finish, securing a comfortable 11-point margin from the relegation zone.

Despite considering various candidates, including Paulo Fonseca, Steve Cooper, Graham Potter, and Brendan Rodgers, Palace management ultimately favored Hodgson due to his remarkable track record from the previous season and his excellent rapport with the squad.

Hodgson, however, chose to keep the suspense alive regarding his future with the club, declining to confirm his return for the 2023-24 campaign ahead of Palace’s final match last season. In his own words, “I signed a contract until the end of the season here. I was very happy to do so, I’m grateful to be given the opportunity. All along I have seen this as my last game on my contract, as far as I am concerned that is what it is.”

This marks the third time Hodgson has been appointed by Crystal Palace, a club where he also had a previous stint as a player. With a managerial career spanning over 45 years, Hodgson’s remarkable journey has encompassed notable teams such as Inter Milan, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace. Additionally, he has guided national sides including England, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and Finland.
