Chelsea maintained their strong away performance in the Premier League by defeating 10-man Southampton 5-1, narrowing the gap to league leaders Liverpool to seven points. A significantly altered Chelsea team showcased their skills in an entertaining first half. The visitors took an early lead just seven minutes in when Axel Disasi’s header redirected Enzo Fernández’s corner into the net. However, despite not having lost a Premier League match after scoring first, Chelsea conceded just four minutes later when Kyle Walker-Peters outmaneuvered Fernández and set up Joe Aribo for an easy goal.

Southampton’s season has been marred by defensive errors, and another one cost them when Joe Lumley’s careless turnover allowed Noni Madueke to assist Chelsea’s leading scorer, Christopher Nkunku, who easily scored into an open net. This marked the Saints’ ninth Premier League mistake that resulted in a goal this season. Chelsea quickly put pressure on Southampton, hitting the post with Cole Palmer’s shot and the crossbar with Tosin Adarabioyo’s effort before Madueke scored their third goal, skillfully maneuvering into the box to place a shot into the far corner. Southampton’s situation worsened before halftime when captain Jack Stephens received a red card for the second time this season after pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair.

The second half began with João Félix missing a header from Palmer’s cross, followed by Tosin hitting the post from a corner, and Madueke being denied by a last-minute tackle. Southampton had a rare opportunity to get back into the game when Filip Jörgensen saved Mateus Fernandes’ shot, but they soon found themselves under pressure again as Madueke forced another save from Lumley. Struggling for most of the match, Southampton’s defense finally broke in the 77th minute, largely due to Nkunku, who chose to pass to Palmer for an easy tap-in instead of shooting himself when he was through on goal.

The Blues capped off a fantastic night with a fifth goal, as Jadon Sancho, staying onside, scored his first for the club. This victory elevates Chelsea to sole possession of second place, putting them ahead of Arsenal and intensifying speculation about their potential title challenge.

On the other hand, no team with only five points at this point in a Premier League season has ever managed to avoid relegation, a troubling statistic for Russell Martin’s Southampton, who are currently at the bottom of the table with just one win.
