Davy Klaassen of Ajax Amsterdam suffered a head injury after being struck by an object thrown from the stands, creating a lengthy delay before his side edged bitter rivals Feyenoord in Rotterdam on Wednesday to book a place in the Dutch Cup final.
After Klaassen scored, rival players near the corner flag caused a commotion in which the Netherlands midfielder was struck on the head, allegedly by a cigarette lighter.
Ajax players walked off the field, followed by Feyenoord players, whose assistant coach John de Wolf subsequently came out to scold home fans before the game resumed.
He asked Feyenoord supporters to "use your common sense" over the PA system.
The incident caused the game to be stopped for 28 minutes, and Klaassen had to be replaced soon after the game resumed, indicating that he was dizzy.
