The Latest on Manchester United News: The Reds part ways with Mason Greenwood

The Latest on Manchester United News: Mason Greenwood has officially left Manchester United following a six-month internal probe.

Both sides mutually decided that the 21-year-old striker should quit the organization. The inquiry was prompted by internet accusations of attempted rape, coercive behavior, and violence against Greenwood that were posted in October 2022. The accusations were eventually withdrawn in February 2023 owing to witness cooperation and a lack of supporting evidence.

Greenwood did not commit the claimed transgressions, according to United’s internal investigation, but it was decided that it would be better for everyone if he continued his career outside of Old Trafford. The club intends to assist Greenwood in finding a new club. Despite leaving, Greenwood thanked Manchester United for their support throughout his time at the team and stated his aim to develop both as a footballer and a person.

Due to the complexity of the matter, the decision has drawn attention. Richard Arnold, the CEO of Manchester United, released an open letter to supporters outlining the club’s decision-making process.

The statement read: “Manchester United has concluded its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood.

“Our process commenced in February 2023, following all charges against Mason being dropped. Throughout, we have taken into account the wishes, rights and perspective of the alleged victim along with the club’s standards and values, and sought to collate as much information and context as possible. This has required us to proceed with sensitivity and care to obtain evidence not in the public domain, including from those with direct knowledge of the case.

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

With his departure, Greenwood’s tenure with Manchester United comes to an end. He played 129 games, netted 35 goals, and made one appearance for England during that time.
