Tottenham News latest: Daniel Levy is optimistic that Harry Kane can remain at the club and win trophies

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy believes Harry Kane can still win a title with the club, but that being a “legend” is also vital.

The England captain has scored 23 Premier League goals this season, second only to Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, but his contract at managerless Spurs is coming to an end. The forward, who has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United or Paris Saint-Germain, has spent his whole professional career with Tottenham but has failed to win a trophy. Spurs’ record goalscorer has frequently stated his desire to win a trophy at his boyhood club, but talks on a new contract have yet to take place.

During an interview at the Cambridge Union Society, Levy stated, “He (Kane) can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs, but being a legend is also important.”

“The fact that he’s the top scorer for Tottenham Hotspur, he’s making history. I hope one day there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium.”

Long-serving chairman Levy is known for his aversion to media appearances and has granted few interviews in his 22 years at Spurs since ENIC purchased the club.

During the event in Cambridge last month, the Tottenham supporter reflected on a number of subjects, including the club’s trophy drought, which has now lasted 15 years.

“It has been an incredible journey and in the 22 years, Tottenham has progressed enormously,” Levy said. “Not as much as a fan we would hope but hopefully the journey is not over and we are still hoping we will get that trophy that we need.

“When we first came in to Tottenham, winning was making sure we stayed in the Premier League. Then as time goes on and we get more successful, it was about getting into the Europa League and then the Champions League.

“Obviously the ultimate goal is to win the trophies. That is clearly what we are trying to do. It’s easier said than done.”

Tottenham’s long-term ownership has been the subject of discussion in recent months, with rumours of outside investment and possible bidders making offers for the club.

Fans have also chanted “Levy Out” throughout recent games.

However, the club are not in negotiations with any bidders over a potential takeover of the Premier League club, Levy has said.

In February, it was rumoured that Iranian-American billionaire Jahm Najafi, chairman of MSP Sports Capital, was preparing a $3.75 billion purchase bid for Spurs.

“ENIC (Group) owns approximately 87% of the club. We have 30,000 shareholders and most of them are fans who own the shares,” Levy told the Cambridge Union in the same wide-ranging interview released on YouTube on Wednesday.

“We have a duty to consider any proposal anyone wants to make. All I would say is we are not in negotiations with anybody. Nor have we been in recent months and all the stuff in the newspapers is completely untrue.”
