Tottenham suffered their fifth loss in their last eight Premier League home matches, as first-half red card for Xavi Simons and a late sending-off for Cristian Romero hampered their efforts in a 2-1 home defeat to Liverpool. Arne Slot’s defensive approach limited the early action in the game, with only a few blocked attempts from Spurs and a weak header from Virgil van Dijk creating notable chances. It took Tottenham 25 minutes to create a clear goal opportunity, but the inefficient Randal Kolo Muani could only direct his header straight at Alisson after Djed Spence kept Pedro Porro’s deep cross in play.

The momentum clearly shifted in Liverpool’s favor around the 30-minute mark when Xavi Simons dragged his studs down the back of Van Dijk’s leg. Referee John Brooks initially gave only a yellow card for the foul, but after being advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, he reversed his decision and issued Simons a red card. Taking advantage of being a player up, Arne Slot substituted Conor Bradley at halftime and brought on Alexander Isak to strengthen his team’s attack.

This move paid off within 15 minutes after the break, as Isak was set up by Wirtz and confidently fired the ball into the far corner. However, Isak had to leave the field limping due to an injury sustained during the play that led to the goal. Liverpool’s troubles nearly worsened just after the 60-minute mark when Randal Kolo Muani’s shot took a deflection over the out-of-position Alisson but bounced off the crossbar to safety. While they were unlucky with the woodwork at one end, they were even more unfortunate moments later when Hugo Ekitike rose highest in the box to head in Jeremie Frimpong’s cross, with his shot brushing the post on its way in.

Spurs created an exciting finish when Richarlison seized a loose ball inside the box to reduce the deficit. The Brazilian had an opportunity to equalize but his shot was blocked by Ibrahima Konaté at the last moment. Liverpool had to endure a tense nine minutes of added time, but their job became easier when Romero was sent off during stoppage time after a confrontation with Konaté. With a two-player advantage, Liverpool comfortably held on to their win, which firmly put them back in the race for European qualification.
