Update on Ivan Toney’s betting charges: Toney has been banned from participating in club and national football matches for eight months

On Wednesday, the governing body of football, the Football Association (FA), announced that Ivan Toney, a striker for Brentford and England, has confessed to 232 violations of the FA’s betting regulations. As a result, he has been fined 50,000 pounds and suspended from playing football for eight months.

Toney has been prohibited from participating in any matches for his club or country until January 16th, 2024, and he has been cautioned about his behavior going forward. The penalties were enforced by a regulatory commission that held a private hearing. In November, the FA accused the Brentford striker of breaking the rules 232 times from 2017 to 2021. In December, he faced an additional 30 charges.

“The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these breaches and he admitted to the remaining 232,” the governing body said.

“The independent regulatory commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course, and the FA will wait to review them before commenting further.”

Starting on September 17th, 2023, Toney will be allowed to resume training for the remaining four months of his suspension.

“Brentford FC is currently awaiting the publication of the written reasons of the independent regulatory commission. We will review them before considering our next steps,” the Premier League club said.

“I am naturally disappointed that I will be unable to play for the next eight months,” Toney wrote on Twitter.

“The written reasons for the commission’s decision have not yet been published, so I can make no further comment at this point other than to thank my family and friends, Brentford FC and our fans for their continued support through what has been a very difficult time,” he added.

“I now focus on returning to play the game I love next season.”

Toney has been able to score 20 goals in 33 league games for Brentford this season, which has contributed to their current position of ninth in the Premier League standings. However, he will not be able to participate in the upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, as well as the final game of the season at home against the leaders Manchester City on May 28th.
