West Ham United has made a significant acquisition by signing midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a deal believed to be around £35 million.

The 25-year-old Mexico international has signed a five-year contract, making him the first summer signing for The Hammers.

Alvarez expressed his enthusiasm about joining the club, describing it as a dream for both himself and his family. He is excited about playing in the Premier League and is determined to give his all for the West Ham shirt.

Manager David Moyes emphasized the importance of strengthening the midfield area, and he sees Alvarez as a valuable addition to complement the team’s options in that department. Alvarez’s versatility as a deep-lying midfielder, and his ability to also operate as a center-back, makes him a valuable asset for The Hammers.

Having made 147 appearances for Ajax and winning multiple titles, Alvarez brings valuable experience to the London Stadium. He was a key figure in the Mexico team that clinched the Concacaf Gold Cup this summer.

The signing comes after West Ham’s high-profile sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal for a significant £105 million. West Ham has been active in the transfer market, with deals in the works for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse, demonstrating their ambition to strengthen the squad.

West Ham fans can expect to see Alvarez in action soon, with the Premier League season kicking off against Bournemouth, where Alvarez could make his debut in the West Ham shirt.
