PSG decided to suspend Messi after he made an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia
Lionel Messi had a schedule to visit Saudi Arabia but had to postpone it twice because PSG was having a poor run of games. It is reported that he requested permission to travel to Saudi on Sunday night but his request was denied. Nevertheless, the world Cup winner decided to go on the trip.
On Monday, he was photographed in Riyadh. He announced his appearance on social media and announced his ambassadorial position with Saudi Arabia. PSG got to know of the situation and they have decided to suspended Lionel Messi for 2 weeks (it will see him miss two games) in which he will not receive his weekly wages.
The action from PSG is interpreted as proof of a new approach wherein club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi emphasises that no one is larger than the team and that everyone must abide by the same set of rules. Messi won’t play in the Ligue 1 matches against Troyes and Ajaccio, but he could be available for the May 21 game against Auxerre.
Lionel Messi’s contract at PSG is about to expire with only two moths remaining. Reports from earlier this year suggested that Messi wanted to know the club’s plans for next season before he commits another year. However, reports now coming is that the French powerhouses are no longer seeking to extend the 35-year-old’s contract.
Barcelona has been working behind the scenes in order to re-sign Messi. This will not be an easy task as Barcelona will have to raise a lot of money to get Messi back at the club. He has also attracted interest from MLS and Saudi Arabia. Al Hilal reportedly wants to offer Messi £400m for a season to play for them in the Saudi Pro League, which could in turn promote the country’s league worldwide.
