Wolves Latest news: Lopetegui is keen rebuild his squad over the summer transfer window in order to be more competitive next season

The manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Julen Lopetegui, stated that he would require an extensive discussion with the club’s chairman regarding the transfer window plans for the upcoming off-season. This comes after the Spanish manager successfully led the team out of the relegation zone and ensured their safety.

In November, Lopetegui became the head coach of Wolves when the team was in danger of being relegated. However, he has since led them to a significant improvement, bringing them up to 13th place and securing their position in the top-flight for the remainder of the season with three games left to play.

The coach who led Sevilla to victory in the Europa League in the 2019/20 season became the official coach for Wolves after the World Cup. He turned the team around, as they had only won two games and were at the bottom of the standings before the mid-season break. However, they won four out of their last six matches and ended up with 40 points.

“I need a long meeting with our chairman (Jeff Shi). We have to be ready to improve and take advantage over the summer. We know the level of the Premier League, so the first step is to take our decision about a lot of players,” Lopetegui told reporters.

“We have to understand what is to happen the next year. We need to improve, we all need to be able to compete better in the next year, that is all.”

“I am not going to talk about what will happen after the meeting. We have to be ready because this year has been a very hard one and can serve as a lesson for all of us.”

Due to a shortage of strikers caused by injuries to Sasa Kalajdzic and Raul Jimenez, Wolves have had the lowest number of goals scored in the Premier League this season. Despite the addition of Diego Costa as an emergency signing, he has only managed to score once in the league.

“In football you have to want to increase your performance, your squad, this is about the investment too. If you don’t do it, all the rest of the teams in the Premier League will,” he added.

On Saturday, Wolves will be playing against Manchester United in an away game. Lopetegui has referred to them as a team with high potential for a top-four position, consisting of skilled players and a competent coach.

“We have ambitions to go there, to play well and to be able to compete with them,” he said, adding that there were no new injury concerns ahead of the trip to Old Trafford.
