La Liga Roundup, Matchday 2
Matchday 2 of the 2025/26 La Liga season has come to an end, showcasing thrilling games, standout player performances, and unexpected results. Here is the La Liga roundup for this round of games.
Betis 1-0 Alaves
Real Betis secured their first La Liga victory of the season by battling to narrowly defeat Deportivo Alavés at La Cartuja, ending a four-match winless streak in top-tier head-to-head encounters. Manuel Pellegrini’s team will now get ready for an away game against Celta Vigo, while El Glorioso will take on the challenging task of hosting the powerhouse Atlético Madrid.

Mallorca 1-1 Celta Vigo
Mallorca and Celta Vigo both failed to secure their first win of the La Liga season after Los Piratas scored a last-minute equalizer, preventing Celta from achieving a third consecutive head-to-head victory. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. Mallorca will next face Real Madrid, while Celta will play at home against Villarreal.
Atletico Madrid 1-1 Elche
Elche earned their first away point against Atlético Madrid since October 1968, with Rafa Mir equalizing an early goal from Alexander Sørloth at the Metropolitano Stadium. This result leaves Diego Simeone’s team still without a win after two LaLiga matches (one draw, one loss). Although Elche remains without a victory in their last 25 top-division visits to Atlético’s home ground, they will head into next week’s home game against fellow newcomers Levante feeling optimistic, viewing this as a significant moral boost.

Levante 2-3 Barcelona
Barcelona staged a remarkable comeback after being two goals behind to beat Levante 3-2, maintaining their flawless start to the La Liga season with a ninth straight away victory in the league. A floated cross from Lamine Yamal created chaos, leading Unai Elgezabal to inadvertently head the ball into his own net in the first minute of stoppage time led the away side to victory. Barcelona have now netted two or more goals in 13 of their last 16 La Liga games, while Levante continue to be without any points since their promotion back to the top tier.

Osasuna 1-0 Valencia
Alessio Lisci secured his first victory as Osasuna’s manager when Ante Budimir netted the winning goal in a tight 1-0 La Liga triumph against a 10-man Valencia at El Sadar, ending a four-year drought for a competitive home win against this opponent. While Osasuna earned their first points of the season, Valencia will be disappointed to have only one point from their first two matches.
Villarreal 5-0 Girona
Tajon Buchanan, who scored a hat-trick, led Villarreal to a commanding 5-0 win over Girona. Four goals in the first half secured the victory early, as the Yellow Submarine achieved their second consecutive win in La Liga and have now scored two or more goals in five straight league matches. Marcelino’s team has started the season strongly, winning both games while scoring seven goals and conceding none. Meanwhile, Girona continues to struggle after their top-four finish two seasons ago, having lost both of their matches this season.
Real Sociedad 2-2 Espanyol
Espanyol failed to secure back-to-back victories in their first two La Liga matches, as Real Sociedad came back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw in a thrilling match. The home team kept pressing until the end, although they did not seriously challenge Dmitrović, and their comeback prevented Espanyol from achieving their first win in San Sebastian since 2015.
Real Oviedo 0-3 Real Madrid
Real Madrid have extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches against Real Oviedo, clinching a 3-0 victory at the Estadio Municipal Carlos Tartiere in La Liga. Despite Alonso and his squad still developing their teamwork, they have secured consecutive clean-sheet wins in La Liga. On the other hand, Oviedo are yet to score their first goal of the 2025/26 league campaign, but head coach Veljko Paunović can find some encouraging signs from the game as he aims to maintain the team’s competitiveness at the highest level beyond this season.

Athletic Bilbao 1-0 Rayo Vallecano
Athletic Bilbao struggled but managed a slim 1-0 victory against Rayo Vallecano, extending their streak to 36 La Liga games without a loss when they were the favorites. Rayo Vallecano faltered in the final moments, enabling Athletic to join Villarreal, Barcelona, and Real Madrid at the top of the standings with six points.

Sevilla 1-2 Getafe
Getafe have secured victories in their first two La Liga matches of the season for just the second time ever, following a 2-1 win on the road against Sevilla. Sevilla’s consecutive defeats at the start of the new season mean they have only one win in their last 13 league games. Getafe managed to maintain their lead, achieving their ninth away win in 13 matches and their third head-to-head win in the last six encounters.
