Premier League Roundup, Matchday 5
Matchday 5 of the Premier League has come to an end, showcasing thrilling matches, impressive individual displays, and surprising results. Below is the Premier League roundup for this round of games.
Liverpool 2-1 Everton
Liverpool continued their flawless beginning to the Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby, achieving only the third occasion in their history where the Reds have won their first five Premier League games. Although there were a few tense moments, Liverpool stayed largely in control and earned their 18th win in the last 29 home matches against Everton. This defeat ends Everton’s four-game unbeaten run and once again gives the red side of Merseyside the bragging rights.

Wolves 1-3 Leeds
Wolves became only the sixth team in Premier League history to lose their first five league matches after a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United at Molineux. The home side appeared more likely to score in the closing moments but ultimately came up short once again, having won just once in their last six head-to-head encounters. Prior to today’s win, Leeds had scored only one goal and will be pleased to secure their first league victory since the opening weekend.
West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace
West Ham United have secured only one victory in their last 11 Premier League home matches (3 draws, 8 losses), following a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. This result extended Crystal Palace’s unbeaten streak in the top division to 11 games (4 wins, 7 draws) and counting. Interestingly, the home team showed little initiative in attacking, and their lack of drive ultimately led to a loss, marking Palace’s seventh consecutive trip to the London Stadium without defeat (4 wins, 3 draws).
Burnley 1-1 Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest have now won only one of their last 10 matches at Turf Moor, as they gave up a 1-0 lead to settle for a 1-1 draw in another determined performance from Burnley. Forest appeared more likely to score the winning goal in the final moments, but had to accept a point that does little to increase their confidence ahead of their midweek trip to Real Betis. For Burnley, it’s definitely a point gained, although it doesn’t significantly improve their current league standing as they aim to build their first successful Premier League survival campaign since the 2020/21 season.
Brighton 2-2 Tottenham
Tottenham recovered from being two goals behind to secure an exciting 2-2 draw against Brighton at the Amex Stadium, preventing a third consecutive head-to-head away loss. Brighton managed to hold on for the draw. However, losing their lead means the Seagulls have only earned five points from five matches, while Spurs remain unbeaten in their last three away league games under Thomas Frank.

Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea
In an intense game where both Chelsea and Manchester United ended the first half with ten players apiece, the Red Devils achieved a 2-1 win at Old Trafford, marking their 13th consecutive unbeaten home Premier League match against the Blues. United managed to hold their lead through seven minutes of stoppage time, securing their second win in three matches and offering some comfort for Amorim. Additionally, they handed Chelsea their first Premier League defeat of the season and extended the Blues’ winless run to three games across all competitions.

Fulham 3-1 Brentford
Alex Iwobi’s goal and assist helped Fulham come from behind to beat Brentford 3-1 in a west London derby at Craven Cottage. This victory marked Fulham’s first back-to-back Premier League wins since February. The win also brought the Cottagers some rare success in London derbies, being only their third triumph in the last eight matches against other London teams. On the other hand, Brentford suffered consecutive league defeats at Craven Cottage for the first time since January 1954 and currently sit 17th after losing three of their first five Premier League games.
Sunderland 1-1 Aston Villa
Although Sunderland were down to 10 players, they managed to come from behind and secure a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in the Premier League, preventing Villa from achieving a third straight head-to-head win over the Black Cats. Sunderland worked hard to maintain their unbeaten Premier League record at the Stadium of Light this season. Meanwhile, Villa scored their first league goal but are still waiting for their first competitive win this season and remain in the relegation zone.
Bournemouth 0-0 Newcastle
Bournemouth and Newcastle were evenly matched as they played a 0-0 draw in the Premier League at the Vitality Stadium, continuing Eddie Howe’s winless record against his former team (5 draws, 2 losses). Newcastle’s third consecutive goalless league draw away from home highlights their ongoing scoring difficulties, having failed to score in their last four Premier League away games during a six-match winless streak that dates back to last season (4 draws, 2 losses). Meanwhile, Bournemouth’s run of three straight home Premier League victories ended with a result that both managers are unlikely to be too dissatisfied with.
Arsenal 1-1 Manchester City
In a clash that many already viewed as crucial in the Premier League title race, Gabriel Martinelli scored a late equalizer to secure a 1-1 injury-time draw for Arsenal against Manchester City, extending their unbeaten head-to-head streak to five matches. Martinelli capitalized on Eze’s pass behind the defense, delicately chipping the ball over Donnarumma, sparking wild celebrations at the Emirates Stadium. This goal kept Arsenal, who are in second place, three points ahead of Manchester City.
