Argentina’s 4-2 triumph against France on penalties has Emiliano Martinez convinced that the 2022 World Cup is in his country’s destiny to win.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper made several crucial stops, including saving a penalty in the shootout and stopping Aurelien Tchouameni, who missed his penalty, to help propel his country to its first World Cup victory in 36 years.

He now has the Copa America, the World Cup, and the Golden Glove trophy from the competition in his suddenly magnificent trophy case.

Just after game, Emiliano Martinez gave his assessment to reporters: “It was a very complicated match, they came back to equalise in the game but it was our destiny to suffer.”

The 30-year-old continued: “All that I have dreamed of has been achieved. I have no words for it. I was calm during the penalty shoot-out, and everything went as we wanted.

“I left very young for England. I dedicate this victory to all my family.”
