Bayer Leverkusen moved ahead of RB Leipzig to claim third place in the Bundesliga standings by coming back from an early setback to win 3-1 at the Red Bull Arena. This victory ended Leipzig’s streak of scoring at least two goals in nine consecutive home matches across all competitions. True to the high-scoring nature of both teams, the match started with intense speed. Eraly on, Conrad Harder’s shot aimed at the bottom-left corner was impressively saved by Mark Flekken. Leipzig kept up the pressure, and broke through when Xaver Schlager received a throw-in, skillfully maneuvered past several defenders near the box, and shot low into a narrow opening at the bottom-left corner.

Just before halftime, Leverkusen struck unexpectedly when Martin Terrier scored with a header from close range following a lofted pass into the box from Arthur. Remarkably, Leverkusen completed the comeback only four minutes later, as Nathan Tella delivered a precise pass to Patrik Schick, who skillfully dribbled past his defender and curled the ball into the far corner. This goal marked Schick’s impressive return from an ankle injury. Despite Leipzig’s efforts to equalize early after the break, Harder was left frustrated when he lost out in a quick one-on-one against Flekken following a failed clearance.

By this point, the home supporters’ frustration was becoming increasingly obvious, while Harder’s own dissatisfaction grew even more around the 60-minute mark when he narrowly missed a header. After that, the game’s earlier intensity started to fade, with more minor fouls and time-wasting occurring as Leverkusen continued to frustrate their opponents until the final whistle. Leipzig conceded a third goal in the final moments when Montrell Culbreath scored on a swift counter-attack. As a result, the Red Bulls now hold just a two-point lead over Hoffenheim in a tightly contested battle for top four.
