Atalanta vs Chelsea Review
Atalanta overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Chelsea 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League, marking only their second victory in eight matches against English teams. This result extended Chelsea’s winless streak in away Champions League games to five matches. Atalanta nearly scored just six minutes in when Ademola Lookman skillfully navigated through Chelsea’s defense, forcing Robert Sánchez to make a near-post save. Charles De Ketelaere then missed the chance to capitalize on the rebound.

Later, Sánchez was unable to stop a shot from Lookman inside the box around the middle of the first half, but an exceptional block by Josh Acheampong prevented the Lookman from scoring. Atalanta were left regretting missed opportunities after 25 minutes when João Pedro converted a low cross from Reece James on the left. Although the linesman immediately raised the flag for offside, a VAR review confirmed that both players were onside. This goal completely shifted the momentum of the half, with Chelsea controlling the pace until halftime, while Atalanta rarely threatened to create another chance.

However, the Serie A team showed a different side after the break, continuing their trend of scoring in the second half. Lookman finally found the net eight minutes into the second half, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside. Just two minutes later, De Ketelaere delivered a perfect cross for Gianluca Scamacca to head in, denying Chelsea a second consecutive clean sheet in 11 Champions League matches. To make matters worse for Chelsea, the equalizer came shortly after James missed a chance to make it 2-0 with a low shot that narrowly missed the target.

Scamacca nearly turned the game around by redirecting a free-kick towards goal, but Sánchez made an excellent save. Alejandro Garnacho’s shot, aimed directly at Marco Carnesecchi, was the closest Enzo Maresca’s team came to regaining the lead before the hosts scored the crucial third goal. De Ketelaere advanced into the penalty area as Chelsea defenders retreated, and his shot deflected off both Marc Cucurella and Sánchez before going into the net. Carnesecchi remained strong, denying Garnacho and James late in the match, securing only Atalanta’s third home win in eight games, while Chelsea suffered their first Champions League loss since Matchday 1.
