Barcelona vs Girona Review
Robert Lewandowski is on track to achieve a second Pichichi Trophy in three years, having scored two goals in a 4-1 win against Girona, which helped maintain his team’s three-point lead at the top of the standings. Fermín López was the first to pose a threat, with a shot inside the box blocked by a Girona defender, and Lewandowski then attempted a shot towards the bottom-right corner, which Paulo Gazzaniga managed to save. Girona faced another potential setback shortly after when Yáser Asprilla seemed to foul López in the box, but the initial decision to award a free kick just outside the area was upheld after a VAR review by Juan Luis Pulido Santana.
Even though the free kick didn’t result in a goal, Barcelona continued to control the game, with Ronald Araújo nearly scoring in the 21st minute, but his header from a corner was instinctively saved by Gazzaniga. Girona seemed to have successfully held on until halftime, but fate intervened when Yangel Herrera fouled just outside the box. The resulting free kick was redirected into the net by Ladislav Krejčí after Lamine Yamal appeared to flick a header past Gazzaniga.
Surprisingly, Girona equalized just eight minutes into the second half. Araújo’s mistake on the right side put Barcelona under pressure, and Daley Blind seized the opportunity, sending a precise pass to Arnaut Danjuma, who easily outpaced Araújo and scored his fourth La Liga goal of the season. Barcelona made a strong comeback, returning to form shortly after the hour mark. Just moments after Eric García hit the post from a distance, a series of passes led to Gavi crossing to the far post for López. López then headed the ball across the goal where Lewandowski was waiting, and he jumped high to direct it past Gazzaniga.
Lewandowski scored again when a quick counter-attack allowed Frenkie De Jong to pass the ball to him on the left side of the box. With his usual composure, he fired an unstoppable shot into the far corner. Ferran Torres then sealed the win by receiving a squared ball from Gerard Martin on the left, controlling it effortlessly before slotting it low past Gazzaniga.
As a result, Barcelona heads into April in a strong position to secure their 28th La Liga title, while Girona will want to quickly move on from this match, having only won once in their last 11 away games across all competitions (with 2 draws and 8 losses).
