Brentford vs Liverpool Review
Darwin Núñez netted two goals in stoppage time, helping Liverpool secure a 2-0 victory over Brentford and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League by 6 points. This win marked their 10th victory in the last 12 encounters against Brentford. Despite the mounting pressure as league leaders, Liverpool started slowly in the capital and were nearly behind early on when Mikkel Damsgaard missed a chance to score from Mads Roerslev’s low cross. Ryan Gravenberch also had a chance but his long-range shot was saved well by Mark Flekken. Dominik Szoboszlai came close to scoring as well, hitting the crossbar, while Christian Nørgaard missed a header for Brentford from a Bryan Mbeumo free-kick.
Liverpool was the more active side before halftime, but they couldn’t find a way to score as Flekken quickly came off his line to deter a shot from Cody Gakpo. The Reds maintained their dominance in the second half, earning over ten corners, yet Brentford’s defense held firm. Luis Díaz’s low shot forced another save from Flekken just before he was substituted for Núñez, who missed the target with a header shortly after entering the game.
As the match neared its end, opportunities arose for both teams, with Alexis Mac Allister heading wide for the visitors and Alisson saving a free-kick from Mbeumo, as well as denying a low shot from the Cameroonian. Liverpool’s frustration grew when Trent Alexander-Arnold took a long-range shot that narrowly missed the post, causing a scare for the home fans.
The Reds continued to press, with Mohamed Salah missing a chance before the crucial goal was scored in the final moments. Núñez scored from close range after receiving a pass from Alexander-Arnold. Just two minutes later, the Uruguayan found the net again, finishing calmly after a setup from Harvey Elliott, which extended their unbeaten streak in away league matches to 11. On the other hand, Brentford faced late disappointment, having won only one of their last nine games and none of their last five at home.
