Levi Colwill has committed his future to Chelsea despite interest from Brighton
Chelsea has confirmed that Levi Colwill, the talented defender, has signed a new long-term contract with the club. The 20-year-old’s impressive performances on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2022-23 season caught the attention of several clubs, with Brighton eager to secure a permanent deal and Liverpool also showing interest.
However, Chelsea’s new head coach, Mauricio Pochettino, made it clear that Colwill was part of his plans and the young center-back has now committed his future to Stamford Bridge. Colwill’s new contract is for an initial six years, with the option to extend for an additional year, potentially keeping him at Chelsea until 2030.
Speaking about his decision, Colwill expressed his happiness, stating that Chelsea has always been an easy choice for him, having been with the club since under-9s level. He praised the manager, Pochettino, for giving him the trust and reassurance he needed to stay at the club.
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, hailed Colwill as an outstanding player who has risen to every challenge in his career. They are thrilled that he will continue to be part of the Chelsea squad for years to come.
Colwill’s journey from the academy to the first team is a testament to his talent, dedication, and determination. Despite not yet making a competitive senior appearance for Chelsea, his performances on loan at Brighton and Huddersfield Town have showcased his potential as a promising defender.
In addition to his club success, Colwill was a key figure for England’s Under-21s during their triumphant run to the European Championship title earlier this summer. He earned a place in the Team of the Tournament for his contributions to England’s defensive solidity throughout the competition.
Chelsea fans can look forward to seeing Colwill in action during the upcoming Premier League season, as he may make his competitive debut when the Blues take on Liverpool in their opening game on August 13.
Levi Colwill’s new contract is just one part of Chelsea’s busy transfer window, with Pochettino making significant changes to the squad. Several new players have been brought in, while a number of first-team players have departed. The club is keen to return to top form after finishing 12th in the previous season.
