Newcastle vs Chelsea Review
Chelsea came back from a two-goal deficit at halftime to secure a 2-2 draw in the Premier League against Newcastle United, a result that extends the Magpies’ unbeaten streak at St James’ Park to 10 matches (8 wins, 2 draws). Newcastle quickly asserted themselves against fellow EFL Cup semi-finalists Chelsea. Just four minutes into the game, Robert Sánchez made an impressive reaction save to deny Anthony Gordon’s close-range shot, but he was unable to stop Nick Woltemade from scoring into an empty net on the rebound.

Woltemade scored again by skillfully redirecting Gordon’s in-swinging cross, giving the Magpies a two-goal lead. As the first half progressed, the visitors started to improve and nearly reduced the deficit when Pedro Neto accidentally handled the ball into the net. Despite this, the home team nearly secured the win before halftime when Woltemade narrowly missed directing Gordon’s dangerous cross on target. Just four minutes after the second half began, Reece James boosted his team’s confidence by curling a beautiful free-kick off the post to cut the deficit in half.

Shortly after, Trevoh Chalobah escaped punishment for a harsh challenge on Gordon that might have resulted in a penalty. The Blues managed to equalize in the 66th minute through João Pedro. His first touch from Sánchez’s long pass allowed him to evade Malick Thiaw, giving him the opportunity to sprint towards goal and calmly finish past Aaron Ramsdale. The match ended with an intense back-and-forth as James made a sliding tackle to prevent substitute Harvey Barnes from scoring what seemed like a certain goal. Anthony Elanga had a chance to snatch the win in the final moments, but his counterattack concluded with a shot that went wide, bringing an exciting game to a close.

Newcastle have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 10 consecutive matches, a worrying statistic for the Toon after losing a strong halftime lead and dropping into the lower half of the Premier League table. For Enzo Maresca, the much-improved performance in the second half means his team will finish the weekend in the same position they started, fourth place, despite having dropped points in four of their last five league matches (one win, three draws, one loss).
