PSG News Latest: French players’ union supports Kylian Mbappe amid PSG contract row

PSG News Latest: The National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) in France has criticized Paris Saint-Germain for leaving Kylian Mbappe out of their pre-season tour to Asia.

This comes as a result of an ongoing contract dispute between the player and the club.

Reports suggest that PSG has made Mbappe available for transfer after tensions arose between the two parties last month.

Mbappe had previously stated that he would not extend his contract, which will end next season, allowing him to depart for free in June 2024. However, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made it clear that they will not allow Mbappe, who has been the top scorer in the French league for the past five seasons, to leave without a transfer fee.

“These players – all of them – must enjoy the same working conditions as the rest of the professional workforce,” the main trade union for professional football players in France, said in a lengthy statement on Saturday.

“The UNFP feels it would be useful to remind managers that putting pressure on an employee – via the deterioration of their working conditions, for example – to force them to leave or accept what the employer wants constitutes moral harassment, which French law firmly condemns.”

“So, yes, the UNFP reserves the right to take civil and criminal action against any club that behaves in this way,” the statement said.

PSG has been victorious in nine out of the last 11 Ligue 1 seasons, but their triumphs in domestic competitions have not translated to success in the Champions League. Despite investing heavily in their squad, PSG has never won the prestigious European trophy.

The club now faces a difficult decision regarding Kylian Mbappe, as they risk losing him for free if they allow his contract to expire. PSG spent 180 million euros to acquire Mbappe from AS Monaco in 2017, and they would be unable to recoup any of that investment.

Mbappe has been linked with a potential move to Real Madrid, a club that has won the Champions League a record 14 times.
