Serie A: Inter Milan vs Spezia live

Preview

Inter Milan will try to continue their current ascent up the table in Serie A when they host Spezia in a midweek match at the San Siro stadium at exactly 17:30 GMT. Spezia are now in danger of relegation and should find it more difficult at the champions’ home.

Inter Milan will be looking for their eighth win in ten games as they return to San Siro, only a point behind city rivals Milan and four behind leaders Napoli. Their opponents are just a point above the drop zone following their latest setback on Sunday. For the first time since 2011-12, Inzaghi’s team have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League. Inter have four wins in their past six Serie A games have put them on the shoulders of the previously distant top two, with a number of favourable matchups remaining before the winter break. Since the start of last season, Inter have won the most home games in the top five European leagues, so there’s no reason to anticipate anything less than three points when the final whistle blows today.

Spezia, who have lost three of their past four Serie A games, looks to be in no hurry to get back on track. In their last match, Thiago Motta’s side lost 1-0 at home to Bologna. Spezia also has a dismal road record, having lost four of their past five away games. Some of their most heinous defeats have occurred on the road, including a 4-0 loss to Verona and a 5-2 loss to Atalanta in their most recent away matches. The team from Liguria is one of the primary relegation threats in Serie A this season, languishing near the bottom of the table. With 32 goals surrendered in 14 games, they have the poorest defensive record in the division.

Head-to-head

Last season, Inter Milan went undefeated against Spezia, winning 2-1 at the San Siro before drawing 1-1 in the reverse encounter.

Prediction

Given the disparity in form between the two teams, this seems to be a one-sided match. Spezia, in particular, have showed little potential and have the league’s poorest defensive record. Inter Milan, who have no shortage of talented attacking players and are eager for goals, might put Spezia’s shaky backline to the test. Inter might win three straight Serie A games for the first time since Simone Inzaghi took over as manager after winning two games against Napoli and Venezia.
