I spent twenty minutes last Sunday listening to a lad in a designer tracksuit explain the intricacies of the English football pyramid to a group of bewildered parents, using words like “structural synergy” and “meritocratic frameworks.” Give me a break. If you want to understand how football leagues and promotion work, you don’t need a
I’ve spent far too many Sunday mornings watching “tactical gurus” on television draw elaborate, swirling arrows across a screen, promising some revolutionary complete guide to attacking play that will turn every Sunday League side into prime Barcelona. It’s nonsense. You can have all the high-pressing, positional-play diagrams you want, but if your winger is standing
I spent twenty years watching “tactical gurus” on television draw pretty little arrows on a screen, claiming they’ve unlocked the secrets of modern football. They make it sound like a mathematical equation, but if you’ve ever stood on a waterlogged touchline trying to explain how the 4-2-3-1 works to a group of teenagers who can
I’ve spent more hours on rain-soaked touchlines than I have in my own living room, and if there’s one thing that makes my blood boil, it’s the way modern pundits treat tactical diagrams like they’re sacred geometry. They’ll show you these beautiful, static shapes on a screen, all neat lines and perfect spacing, but they
I’ve spent more Sunday mornings than I care to count standing on waterlogged pitches, watching coaches set up these elaborate, multi-colored cone labyrinths that look more like a geometry exam than a football session. They spend forty minutes on a drill where the players pass a ball through a series of tiny gates, thinking they’re
I’ve spent more Sunday mornings than I care to count standing on waterlogged pitches, watching coaches set up these ridiculous, expensive ladder drills that look more like a circus act than a football session. They’ll have kids dancing through plastic sticks, thinking they’ve mastered agility, only to watch them turn like a heavy-duty lorry the
I’ve spent more Sunday mornings than I care to count standing on a waterlogged touchline, watching “expert” coaches walk around with their clipboards, lecturing about high-press triggers and complex zonal shading. They’ll hand you a glossy, twenty-page manual and call it a complete guide to defending, but you won’t find much in there about what
I’ve spent far too many Sunday mornings watching eighteen-year-olds trudge through mud, looking like they’re trying to sprint through a vat of thick porridge. Most of these lads have been told that the secret to speed is some expensive, high-tech plyometric program or a pair of carbon-plated boots that cost more than my first car.
I spent twenty years watching coaches walk onto a pitch with a clipboard and a fancy tactical board, acting as if knowing the names of the roles was the same as understanding them. They’ll give you a lecture on “zonal marking” or “inverted wingers,” but they never bother explaining the actual physical and mental tax
I’ve lost count of how many players I’ve seen sprint straight from the final whistle to the car park, desperate to get home to a sofa and a takeaway. They think they’re “done,” but then they spend the next forty-eight hours walking like they’ve got rusty hinges in their hips. I see it every Sunday
